Should you use cardio as your main way to lose weight? I hope you don’t! Losing weight only with cardio is a painful process that doesn’t really lead long term results. If you want to learn more about why cardio doesn’t really work for weight loss you can see my detailed ”weight loss” video.
How much cardio should you do to lose weight?
If you decide however to use cardio as your main way to lose weight, the amount of cardio needed to create results is equivalent to the number of calories you want to lose. This of course is determined by your goal and the time frame you’ve set to achieve it. It is also determined by the calorie deficit created by your diet, and if you don’t track what you eat you’ll have a more vague estimation. In rough lines, if you want to achieve a 300 kcal deficit per day only with cardio (and not diet) you will of course need to run every day. Sounds like a good idea? Not to me.
How many calories can you burn through cardio?
If you wonder how much running or cardio, in general, is needed to burn a significant amount of calories you’ll be disappointed in the next few lines. Sadly, the number of calories burned through cardio is depressingly low. To give an example an 80kg young male will burn around 400 kcals on a 30 min moderate pace run. That’s equivalent to 7/10 of standard 500gr milk chocolate. My point is that you could easily eat those calories in seconds.
I hope this video helps you get on the right track with your fitness journey!
